THE TRAVELER More than a quarter century after I saw her the image returns, of a barefoot expatriate beside the highway in a tropical village holding a fish, and awaiting the bus as if it were a carnival. She was so patient, young, and foreign. At the time, she looked like an outcast. Now, I envy her distance from all that longs to be forgotten the deforestation, droughts, and wars.
