 THE SPEED OF POETRY


The human mind is designed
to walk rhythmically
from one slow verse to another


never racing to believe
two distant truths
at the same time.


We are the gatherers
of rooted plant growth
awaiting seasonal grain
while all around us, we are also


ourselves, the exhausted
thought-hunters who gallop
shooting obsidian arrows
at a motionless stag's
astonishing beauty.
