MANNA IN THE WILDERNESS
a poem by Sharon Warden

Large, unreal flakes began to fall through sudden sunlight
As manna in the wilderness must have fallen --
To ease the fear of the creatures below.
This was the only sign of heavenly presence.
No other indication of love and omniscience was there.
Only omnipretense, omninothing, omnigrieving pervaded
And stole that celestial shower of snow.
It melted into nothingness.
You couldn't hold it.

They tell me the cemetery floods in Spring
And any garland or memorial plant they bring,
The gardeners are hard-pressed to keep it growing.
It's only hearsay.
I haven't returned.
