such Furies as we know.
I have just spent at least 4 hours listening to Disk one of
Fires: Selected Poems 1963 -
1976 in my pickup truck to and from school. It has been an amazing
experience. I put the CD in with some reservations, feeling fear at some
gut level that the experience of driving in commute traffic and listening to
Gene Fowler would be unsatisfactory and disappointing, that I might not be able
to follow the words, that they might seem somehow diminished by the reality of
getting from point A to point B.
After listening for 35 minutes and upon arriving at Brown College, I
realized that this audio tape is "Hawaii." Like Hawaii, I knew that
no one who hadn't experienced it for themselves would really believe me if I
said,
"You have to listen to this CD. If you like poetry, you have to
listen to this CD."
But it's true.

"Anybody who thinks the poem heard by a listener and the poem heard by a
listening reader is the same poem and
that listening means you don't have to read will hopeful someday be
disillusioned and go on developing the source-eror's power to read.... In
the interim, listening to how the poet reads it aloud, assuming the poet can say it as he's saying it in the writing, then it c'n
help one unlock what the scribe has locked into those
power-glyphs?.
Nothing says you can't read different poems different ways, the same poem
different ways for different listeners, and one poem two or three ways for the
same audience if they really need loosening up or you're teaching them. Then,
you c'n begin to let the latent regularites, across different ways of reading,
float up. The real phrasing, the true measures, the jazz and jism, all the kinds
of punctuation intertwining...."
